We begin with S. S is for Specific. When setting your goals make sure you, and everyone else know what they are. Examples of definite goals are 'to lose 5 pounds' or 'to growth your bench press by 10kg'. Goals that are not definite are 'to lose weight' or 'to get stronger'. If you don't know your final goal how do you know when you get there?
All goals set must be Measurable. There is no point having goals that you can not physically see or judge. A measurable goal is something that deals in percentages, weights or, at least, you can count. Taking the above example 'to lose 5 lbs' as a measurable goal, we can see that 'to lose weight' is not.

Are your goals Achievable? Make sure they are legitimately attainable. Always set small goals to lead to your extreme goal, this will help you no end in reaching when you want to be. An example of an achievable goal is 'to growth your squat by 10%' or 'to decrease your 5km run by 5%'. Some unachievable goals are 'to double your squat in a week' or 'to run 5km in half the time'. It all depends on the individual but you, yourself, know what is achievable or not.
Your goals must also be Realistic. That is the same as Achievable right? No! Can you realistically achieve your goal in a inevitable time-scale? If not, then your goal is not realistic.
You Must Always set a Time-scale for your goals. If you fail to specify a time or date by which you will faultless a goal, you will fail to meet your goal (The preeminent phrase 'If you fail to prepare, you are making ready to fail' comes to mind). Once you have decided on a time-scale, stick to it! Don't move it, forward or back, as this will give you feedback for time to come goals set. If you met your goal early, you know to give yourself less time in future, or to aim higher. If you didn't meet your goal by the time set, you know to give yourself longer, or be more realistic in the introductory phase.
Not meeting a goal may not be down to your goal-setting procedure though. It could be down to many things such as illness, injuries, weather conditions, or lack of attempt on your part. Always take these into notice when re-evaluating your goals and accomplishments at the end of a training programme.
