12 London Bridges

1.London Bridge: 1176

For centuries the only bridge across the Thames in the city, the first stone bridge was begun in 1176, replacing a wooden one which had been there since Roman times. The driving force behind the construction of the bridge was a churchman called Peter of Colechurch but, from the beginning, he had difficulty raising the money to go ahead with his project. At last Henry Ii stepped in, imposing a tax on wool, the proceeds of which went towards the bridge, and it was finally completed in 1209. The old London Bridge is best remembered for two things - it had houses built on it and the heads of traitors were, for many years, impaled on the turrets of the gate at its southern end as a warning to those approaching the city of the fate of those who conspired against the king. The earliest record of houses on the bridge dates from 1201, while the period of its construction. They survived for centuries. According to a writer in Stuart times, the bridge was 'adorned with sumptuous structure and stately and beautiful houses on either side, inhabited by wealthy citizens, and furnished with all manner of trades, comparable in itself to a exiguous city, whose structure are so artificially contrived, and so firmly combined as it seemed to be more than an lowly street, for it is as one continual vault or roof'. The houses were finally removed in the 1750s. Among those whose heads have adorned the bridge have been the Scottish hero William Wallace, the medieval rebel Jack Cade and Henry Viii's minister Thomas Cromwell.

The foundation stone of a new London Bridge was laid in 1825 by the Lord Mayor, who descended 45 feet under the Thames in a cofferdam in order to do so. Since the mid-nineteenth century the bridge has been the beginning point for the University Boat Race.

3.Westminster Bridge: 1750

The Swiss engineer Charles Labelye first submitted his designs for a bridge across the Thames at Westminster in 1738 but it was not opened until twelve years later. One of the difficulties lay in the opposition of the Archbishop of Canterbury, who owned the ferry that ran from Lambeth Palace to Horseferry Road and was involved that the bridge would end his income from it. He was At last given more than?20,000 to soothe his ruffled feathers. an additional one qoute was shortage of cash, and money raised by state lottery had to be used to build the bridge. By-laws forbade dogs to cross the bridge and imposed the death penalty for whatever who defaced it. (There is no record of any graffiti artist suffering the ultimate penalty.) The bridge was the one on which Wordsworth recalled standing in his poem that declared that, 'Earth has not whatever to show more fair' than the view of the city in the early morning. It was also the bridge under which Boswell entertained prostitutes. The whim of doing it there with the Thames rolling below us amused me much.' There had been difficulties with the foundations of the bridge's piers from the beginning - one Mp, working on the assumption that, when in doubt, it's best to blame a foreigner, accused Labelye of being an 'unsolvent, ignorant, arrogating Swiss' - but it was not until the 1850s that Labelye's bridge was supplanted by the gift structure.

4.Blackfriars Bridge: 1769

Blackfriars Bridge was ready for pedestrians in 1766, for horses two years later and wheeled traffic finally crossed it in November 1769. When it was opened Boswell, According to his journals, was 'agreeably struck with its grandeur and beauty'. The bridge, designed by Robert Mylne, was intended to be known as Pitt Bridge, after the politician William Pitt the Elder, but the social refused to accept this and referred to it as Blackfriars Bridge from the start. It was originally a toll bridge but the tolls were abolished in 1785, five years after the Gordon Rioters had unilaterally decided that they were an unnecessary imposition and broken down the toll gates. The gift bridge dates from 1869. In 1982 the body of the Italian banker Roberto Calvi was found hanging under it. Calvi, known as 'God's Banker' because of his close association with Vatican finances, is presumed to have been killed by the Mafia, who had been using his Banco Ambrosiano to launder money, but no one has ever been expensed with his murder.

5.Battersea Bridge: 1772

Built of wood and designed by Henry Holland, who was the architect of many of the more elegant houses in the streets around Sloane Square, Battersea Bridge supplanted a ferry that ran from Chelsea to Battersea. It was rebuilt as an iron bridge by the great Victorian engineer and architect of the London sewers, Sir Joseph Bazalgette, in the late 1880s. The old bridge survives in many of Whistler's Thames paintings, which depict it looming out of the mists and shadows on the river. The climactic sequence of Guy Ritchie's movie Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels was filmed on Battersea Bridge.

6.Vauxhall Bridge: 1816

Opened by the Prince Regent and originally called Regent's Bridge, this was the first iron bridge over the Thames in London. Like most other Thames bridges in the earlier part of the nineteenth century, it was a toll bridge. Pedestrians paid a penny and whatever wishing to drive a score of cattle across the bridge was obliged to fork out 6d. Tolls were finally removed in 1879. The gift bridge dates from the last years of Queen Victoria's reign. In 1966 the occasion sequence of Alfie, the movie that did much to merge Michael Caine's vocation as archetypal Londoner, was filmed on Vauxhall Bridge.

7.Waterloo Bridge: 1817

According to the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova, who saw it soon after it opened, Waterloo Bridge was 'the noblest bridge in the world' and 'worth a visit from the remotest corners of the earth'. Designed by the Scottish engineer John Rennie and opened on the second anniversary of Wellington's victory at the Battle of Waterloo, the bridge carried tolls for the first 60 years of it existence. The last day of the tolls, 5 October 1878, was treated as a high holiday with large crowds of pedestrians jostling one an additional one for the honour of being the last to pay the halfpenny toll. 8.Hammersmith Bridge: 1827

The first suspension bridge in London when it was originally built, the former Hammersmith Bridge was supplanted by the gift structure, designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette, in the 1880s. An Ira bomb in 1996 resulted in the bridge being terminated for four years and it was targeted again in 2000 practically immediately after it had re­opened. These were not the first times that Hammersmith Bridge had been subjected to bomb attack. In 1939, while an earlier campaign of militancy, the Ira left a bomb under the bridge. A pedestrian found it and, acting with admirable speed and courage, threw it into the river where it exploded.

9.Chelsea Bridge: 1858

Excavations undertaken at the time the bridge was first built unearthed human bones and large numbers of discarded weapons which have led archaeologists to believe that a river-crossing here was the site of a battle, probably in the middle of antique Britons and invading Romans. The gift bridge was built in the 1930s. In the 1960s the Chelsea Bridge tea stall became a customary conference place for Rockers.

10.Albert Bridge: 1873

A still-existing sign on the bridge which states that, 'All troops must break step when marching over this bridge' is an indication that, when it was built, it was close to several barracks and that the authorities were involved that too many soldiers stamping their way across it in unison would threaten its suspension. It was in danger of being officially rather than accidentally demolished in the 1950s but a campaign was mounted to save it, led by the poet John Betjeman who wrote that, 'Shining with galvanic lights to show the way to Festival Gardens or grey and airy against the London sky, it is one of the beauties of the London river.'

11.Tower Bridge: 1894

One of the most customary tourist sights of the city, Tower Bridge took eight years to make and its co-designer was Sir John Wolfe-Barry, the son of the architect responsible for an additional one very paramount emblem of London, the Houses of Parliament. The upper span of the bridge, in the middle of the two towers, was originally a walkway, but it was terminated in 1910 because it had become a haunt of prostitutes and thieves. It has recently been re-opened as part of the Tower Bridge Experience. Just below Tower Bridge, marked by a sign, is 'Dead Man's Hole' where bodies thrown into the river from the Tower and surrounding districts were retrieved and stored in a mortuary before burial.

12. Millennium Bridge: 2000

Designed by Norman Foster, the pedestrian bridge linking Bankside and the City was terminated within days of its occasion in 2001 because of its inability to carry any more than a handful of pedestrians without wobbling alarmingly. Valid statements talked of its 'pedestrian-induced vibration' and, in a flurry of mutual recrimination, architects blamed engineers and engineers blamed architects for the fault. The bridge was terminated for more than six months while structural changes were made to stop the wobbling and it re-opened in January 2002.

Presenting: Ottawa - Canada's Capital and An curious voyage Destination

In anticipation of my upcoming trip to Ottawa next weekend I have started to do some study and contacted Ottawa Tourism. Ottawa, as Canada's capital, is one of Canada's most popular trip destinations and it has a great variety destinations, activities and events to offer.

I had an opening to talk with Jantine Van Kregten from Ottawa Tourism who was kind adequate to give me a great normal overview of things to see and do in Ottawa.

Kingston

1. Please supply us with some normal information about Ottawa. How large is the city, where is it located, what is the weather like?

Ottawa is the capital of Canada, and its fourth largest city. With the neighbouring city of Gatineau in the province of Quebec, the region has about 1.2 million people. Ottawa is placed in eastern Ontario, about four hours' drive northeast of Toronto; two hours west of Montreal; and one hour north of the border with the state of New York.

Ottawa enjoys four certain seasons, with warmest temperatures and sometimes high humidity in July and August; a temperate fall with gorgeous fall colours; a cold and snowy winter; and a wet spring.

2. How can one get to Ottawa and what is the best way of getting nearby in Ottawa?

Ottawa is accessible with direct flights from major centres in Canada and several U.S. Cities including New York, Washington, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Atlanta and more. Ottawa is a major stop along the Windsor-Quebec City corridor of Via Rail and bus service also links the city with other Canadian cities.

By car, major thoroughfares include Highway 416 that links Ottawa with Highway 401. Highway 417 runs through the city, while Autoroutes 5, 50 and 148 are the major highways on the Quebec side of the river.

3. Ottawa is Canada's capital and has played a valuable role in the history of this country. Please tell us more about that and the Canadian legacy Experiences offered in Ottawa.

The story of Ottawa begins with the construction of the Rideau Canal in the middle of 1826 and 1832 by Lt. Col. John By of the Royal Engineers and thousands of mostly Irish labourers. The Canal stretches 202 km (126 miles) through eastern Ontario to the St. Lawrence River and was built to ensure a supply line in case of American assault (which never came). The Canal was never used for a military purpose and its 49 locks are still operated in the same way as when they were built. In fact, the Rideau Canal is Canada's nominee to be named a Unesco World legacy Site, which is anticipated in 2007, the 175th anniversary of its construction.

Queen Victoria decreed in 1857 that Ottawa would be the capital of the country that became Canada. The majestic Parliament structure were constructed shortly thereafter and remain a "must-see" attraction in the capital. As the capital, Ottawa is also home to 24 Sussex Drive (the prime minister's house and not open to the public); Rideau Hall (home of the Governor General, with guided tours of house and gardens available); and dozens of high commissions and embassies from governments nearby the world.

Don't miss Laurier House, home to both Sir Wilfrid Laurier and William Lyon Mackenzie King, two previous prime ministers, or the Mackenzie King Estate, King's summer home in Gatineau Park.

4. Please tell us about some of the major attractions, museums and galleries in the Ottawa area.

The newest increasing to the national museum scene is the impressive Canadian War Musuem, which opened in May 2005 in a striking location next to the Ottawa River. Canada's most-visited museum is Gatineau's Canadian Museum of Civilization. The National Gallery of Canada offers the largest variety of Canadian art, along with European and American masters. Other cultural facilities include the Canadian Museum of contemporary Photography; the Canada Aviation Museum; the Canada Science and Technology Museum; the Canada Agriculture Museum; the Royal Canadian Mint; the Currency Museum of the Bank of Canada; and the Canadian Museum of Nature, currently in the midst of a heavy reparation project, to be completed in 2009.

Other museums include the Bytown Museum, which tells the history of Ottawa's early days, including the construction of the Rideau Canal; the Billings Estate Museum that traces the history of a important local family; and the funky Diefenbunker, Canada's Cold War Museum, a four-storey secret bunker that was constructed in the middle of 1959 and 1961 as the location to which the Canadian political and military elite would ride out the effects of a nuclear attack.

5. Our readers would like to find out about the festivals and special events in Ottawa.

The festival scene in Ottawa is a robust, year-round affair. The year kicks off with Winterlude, a huge winter festival held over the first three weekends in February. In March, the Irish society celebrates Irish week, and in March and April, the maple syrup season spawns a number of tasty festivals and events celebrating this tasty treat.

May belongs to the Canadian Tulip Festival--three weeks of celebration of Ottawa's favourite flower. While World War Ii, the Dutch royal family took refuge in Ottawa and Princess Margriet was born here, in a hospital room designated Dutch soil for the event. Canadians played a huge role in liberating the Netherlands and when the royal family returned home after the war, as a gesture of friendship, respect and appreciation, they sent thousands of tulip bulbs. The bulbs have followed every year since and now 3,000,000 tulips bloom in Canada's Capital Region.

Late May brings Canada's largest marathon as part of the Ottawa Race Weekend. Over the summer months, festivals abound: Doors Open Ottawa showcase legacy buildings; Italian Week; the Ottawa Fringe Festival; the Td Canada Trust Ottawa International Jazz Festival; the Nortel Ottawa Dragon Boat Race Festival; Cisco Systems Ottawa Bluesfest (Canada's largest); the Ottawa International room Music Festival (the world's largest); the Sound of Light fireworks festival; Ottawa Busker Festival; Ottawa GreekFest; Ckcu Ottawa Folk Festival; the Central Canada Exhibition; and Pride Week.

On Parliament Hill, two free activities occur daily in the summer: the 10:00 a.m. Changing the Guard ceremony and the evening Sound and Light Show.

In the fall, the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival colours the skies; while the La Vendemmia Harvest Festival tempts visitors' palates. The Ottawa International Animation Festival showcases artists from nearby the world while the Ottawa International Writers Festival provides a forum for authors' intelligent debates. Fall Rhapsody celebrates the astonishing autumn colours.

6. What about restaurants and entertainment / nightlife areas in Ottawa?

Several neighbourhoods offer entertainment options in Ottawa. The ByWard shop is one of Ottawa's oldest neighbourhoods and also functions as its entertainment district, with over 100 food and drink options in just a four-block-square area. Either it's fine dining, a good diner, a cosy bistro, or a romantic cafe, you can find it in "the Market."

Elgin street is other popular nightlife area, with an eclectic choice of bars, restaurants and cafes in just a few blocks. Bank street offers three or four certain areas along its length, including a popular area known as the Glebe. In the near west end, Westboro is also an intelligent choice for evening meal and drinks.

Of course, one could also choose to search for the varied options at the Casino du Lac-Leamy--whether it's gaming excitement or a show at its popular theatre or a evening meal at its five-diamond restaurant Le Baccara. The region's other five-diamond preparation (two of only 11 across Canada) is Signatures at Le Cordon Bleu Ottawa.

7. Please give us an overview of the performing arts on offer in Ottawa.

The National Arts Centre is Canada's premier performing arts centre, gift English and French theatre performances, dance, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Numerous smaller theatres also abound, in both English and French, including the Great Canadian Theatre Company, La Nouvelle Scene, Ottawa petite Theatre, Third Wall Theatre Company, Odyssey Theatre (offering outdoor performances next to the Rideau River), A firm of Fools, and many productions at Arts Court, a municipal facility.

From May 18 to June 11, the Cirque du Soleil will bring its output of Quidam to Ottawa. The Canada Dance Festival takes place every two years (June 2-10, 2006) in Ottawa and the Ottawa Fringe Festival (also in June) is one of the best ways to see new productions and new innovations. In

The Centrepointe Theatre in the west end offers a variety of performances, as do the University of Ottawa and Carleton University.

Larger events are usually held at Scotiabank Place and the Ottawa Civic Centre.

8. What are some of the shopping opportunities in Ottawa?

Some great shopping centres exist in Ottawa, including Bayshore Shopping Centre in the west end, Rideau Centre downtown, the St. Laurent Centre in the close east end, and Place d'Orleans Shopping Centre in the east end. These centres offer the best of the well-known brands.

For more eclectic offerings, the ByWard shop neighbourhood offers great fashion and housewares; as does the Glebe, Westboro, and some small towns on both the Ontario and Quebec side of the Ottawa River--inclouding Merrickville, Manotick, Perth, Chelsea and Wakefield.

9. What are the outdoor, recreational and sports opportunities in and nearby Ottawa?

From a expert perspective, the Ottawa Senators are particularly popular by Ottawans, as they march to a Stanley Cup victory! The Ottawa '67s offer a window to the Ontario Hockey League. The Ottawa Renegades supply Canadian Football League excitement while the Ottawa Lynx are part of baseball's International League (they're the Triple A farm team for the Baltimore Orioles).

But sports in Ottawa are much more participatory than that. Home to hundreds of kilometres of recreational pathways, Ottawans love to cycle, inline skate and hike. The Ottawa River offers anticipated whitewater rafting, as well as canoe and kayak adventures for the adventurous.

The top bungee freefall in Canada is placed just north of Ottawa, just exterior Gatineau Park. Year-round, Gatineau Park offers something for the outdoor lover. That venue is part of Petra, placed in Jordan, and from April 7, 2006 through January 2, 2007, you can learn more at the Canadian Museum of Civilization's exhibition Petra: City of Stone.

The Seven Years War is the focus of a new exhibit at the Canadian War Museum, Ottawa's newest cultural attraction which opened with much fanfare in May 2005. The exhibit Clash of Empires: The War That Made Canada runs from May 18 to November 12.

Outdoor activities are a crucial part of Ottawans' lives. This summer, residents will be able to relish in others' accomplishments, too, as Ottawa plays host to more than 3,500 athletes and coaches While the 2006 Ontario Summer Games from August 9 to 13, 2006.

Québec Scene: April/May 2007: The National Arts Centre has played host to two previous "scenes"--Atlantic Scene in 2003 and Alberta Scene in 2005--and in 2007, it's Québec's turn to shine, as the very best of its theatre, music, dance, comedy, culinary arts, literature and film forms the basis of this cultural festival.

Treasures from Beijing: May 11-September 30, 2007: At the Canadian Museum of Civilization, learn more about the amelioration of Chinese civilization while viewing excellent treasures from the National Museum of China. Rideau Canal as Unesco World legacy Site: The legacy Rideau Canal, stretching 202 km from Ottawa to Kingston, is Canada's entry to be named a Unesco World legacy Site. The designation should be received in time for the 175th anniversary of the completion of the Canal in 2007.

Portrait Gallery of Canada: Following last spring's opening of the new Canadian War Museum, the next major cultural practice planned for Ottawa is the Portrait Gallery of Canada, due to open across the street from Parliament Hill in late 2007.

If Wilma goes West or North West she will added flood already flooded regions of Central America and that could spell even more problems to the area, just barely done burying the dead from the remnants and flooding from Hurricane Stan. This Hurricane season has hit Central America hard and has killed about the same amount of population there that Hurricane Katrina did in the United States

Gremlins 2: The New Batch Movie tell

Gremlins 2: The New Batch is a 1990 horror comedy distributed by Warner Bros. Taking place a few years after the events of Gremlins, Gremlins 2: The New Batch takes place primarily in a New York City office building. The lovable Mogwai Gizmo is now homeless as Mr. Wing, his owner, has passed away and his ancient store demolished. Some scientists from an office building owned by Clamp Enterprises picks him up and takes him to the lab for tests. Today his old friend Billy Peltzer is engaged to Kate Beringer. The two work at the same office building Gizmo is taken to. He is a designer and she is a tour guide. Billy hears a well-known tune that Gizmo used to sing and heads for the explore lab where he finds his long-lost pal. He rescues the minuscule Mogwai and hides him in a drawer for his fiance to pick up later. But the engaging Gizmo gets out and is sprayed by a colse to water fountain, spawning more Mogwai creatures. Kate comes by and gets one of the Mogwai, reasoning it is the mild Gizmo. But the other more mischievous creatures had forced the minuscule Mogwai into the air vent and trapped him. She takes the beast home and immediately notices that it likes to cause trouble. Billy soon comes home and recognizes that it is not Gizmo. That night, they try to take it back to the building but are thrown out. The next day, they return to the building and find out that there are many more of them. The good Mogwai trains like Rocky does in the Rocky film series, which also starred Stallone. He uses his makeshift bow and arrow to save Kate and Marla from the giant mutant spider gremlin.

To wrap, Gremlins 2 is more humorous than its predecessor and offers some quite engaging characters and hilarious gremlin antics.
