Germany's Back-Office Segment Shows Strong increase

Bpo provider, Sitel has 60,000 staff in 27 countries. It currently has 5 sites in Germany with over 3,000 workers. Sitel's German operations are set up as multi-channel centers, meaning services can be in case, granted with the help of all relevant media.

Germany Trade and spend was instrumental in setting up these centers as the body in case, granted store analysis, brain and gave guidance on the right locations to set up operations. Sitel's Marketing owner for Northern Emea, Janine Woelki tells Sson how services in Germany has created trust and confidence in the market.

Kingston

Sson: Why did Sitel pick five locations in Germany to set up the Bpo operations?

Jw: seeing at Emea, as a whole, Germany is a very strong store for Bpo business. We wanted to cover the German language with German natives. Sitel is a Us-based company, so we wanted to furnish this language at the best capability level. From a recruitment point of view, Germany is the best place to be. We are in five locations and pick those locations depending on the project we get.

For example, where we control from Dusseldorf/Krefeld, labor costs are higher but from a recruitment perspective there is a more defined skill-set. If we have a project where there is a high ration of sales or second to third level tech agents, we will most likely base them in the Dusseldorf/Krefeld where the skill-set is a bit more basic. When the client requires lower labor cost, we implement those projects in the eastern part, where we control from Dessau, Wittenberg and Berlin. In Berlin, there's a good mix, because you can concentrate the east and west, a very high skill-set but, compared to the western part, a lower level of labor costs.

Sson: What services, Janine, are your centers providing, over the board?

Jw: We specialize in buyer care, such as client exposition, client retention, and sales and back office services for our clients' collections.

Sson: Can you talk us straight through the timeframe of when the centers were established?

Jw: The implementation has been spread over the last 18 years. The first German site was opened in 1992 in Dusseldorf. This business was called Client Logic then and in 2007 Client Logic bought Sitel and hence our name today. The last German site to be opened was Berlin in 2008.

Sson: How does Sitel in Germany fit in with you global strategy? I understand you have operations in 27 countries?

Jw; That's correct, yes. Germany reflects one part or region of Sitel's Global footprint. Sitel is complicated in pan-Emea and multi-site strategy deals, so we can offer multilingual withhold out of Berlin. The center in Berlin has many separate nationalities, similar to London, all in one city. This gives us a big advantage. Also, people tend to be very extremely educated in Berlin, because there are a lot of universities there, which is breathtaking for us.

We have a very high level of sales expertise in our center in Krefeld. And we also have those low cost options out of Wittenberg or Dessau, for example. So we are very flexible and can react agreeing to our client needs and expectations. Global sourcing or choosing the best option for our clients out of our 110 plus centers worldwide is what we legitimately do well. We can offer five options to withhold our clients: We can offer onshore, offshore or nearshore options in Poland and Bulgaria. We also offer homeshoring and can control direct from the client centers,. Commonly speaking - we search the most proper talent and skills from over the globe to furnish the best services to our client needs.

Sson: Thanks for that overview, Janine. What challenges, from an organizational point of view, did Sitel face along the way when implementing services in Germany?

Jw: We face a lot of competition in Eastern Germany and it's growing every day, so we legitimately need to deliver a good service. When we speak of competition, we mean other Bpo providers. The type of competition, whether it is price or staffing depends on the project. Every project is separate and every requirement is different.

Another challenge when you have a new location is developing the infrastructure, like a telecom or a facility. Also the manufactures is quite young so we have to import talent and expertise.

Sson: That's an moving point you bring up there, Janine. It is estimated that 75% of the manufactures in outsourcing is under 30 years old. How do you find communicating with that age group? Can you give examples of how you reveal with your talent and staff?

Jw: We spend a lot of time, endeavor and money on our training department. This is one part of a principles we call Global Operating principles (Gos), which is very unique for Sitel, based on 30 years of experience. We furnish a toolbox, a set of processes and methodology that can ensure that we use the same kind of processes and training methods around the globe. We want to ensure that we furnish the same proper or level of capability around the globe to our customers. Every project implementation starts with the training for the agent so, no matter who we recruit, this person will go straight through a training phase. It's correct, a lot of our employees are quite young, but this is good, but sometimes challenging.

Sson: In terms of infrastructure, staffing and competition, I'm sure you've learned lessons along the way, can you share some of those?

Jw: When we pick a location, we have something like a score card in play and we carry a lot of determination on the market, location and local recruitment, so this helps us a lot initially to rule a good location for Sitel. With regard to Germany, all was organized quite well and we invested a lot of time there to pick those places, so there are no complaints or regrets.

Sson: We're hearing more decisions around nearshoring or rural shoring, as 2010 comes to a close, what are your thoughts about bringing work back closer to the customer?

Jw: Well, in terms of nearshore options, it's working extremely well for Sitel. We control from two locations; Warsaw and Sofia. We have compared Warsaw to Germany and observed that there legitimately isn't a gap anymore when it comes to capability and cost. However, Sofia is economy to control out of, but theses centers in Poland and Bulgaria are helping us a lot to cover Eastern European languages as well. We have a very strong client base there and also from a pan-Emea perspective, clients are keen to have one of those nearshore options included in their site set. For us, it's most likely that we will enlarge in the Eastern European part of the Baltic's in the near future, due to the amenity of the region.

Sson: I know you can't discuss the clients that you're serving, but what countries and verticals are you serving from Germany?

Jw: We are very strong on consumer electronics, where we offer a lot of technical support. We are heavily complicated in financial services and in telecommunications. Two verticals which we expect to grow are utilities and healthcare.

Regarding country coverage, most of our clients are based in Europe. We currently furnish 12 separate languages out of Berlin, which covers the whole of Europe. For example we have one client in healthcare in Berlin who has a multi-site strategy, so we serve this client out of Kingston, for example, and the back office service is in case, granted out of Sofia. This is a typical multi-lingual, multi-site client we serve.

Sson: How did Germany Trade & spend assist Sitel when setting up services in Germany?

Jw: There are two examples that come to mind where their aid stands out. Is The first time was in 2001 when Sitel was seeing into options in the Eastern part of Germany, shortly after the [Berlin] wall came down. They in case, granted store analysis, or intelligence, gave guidance on the right location and arranged site visits. In the end, we short-listed two cities - one was Berlin and one was Dessau, and Sitel decided on Dessau at the time, because this was the leading city in terms of cost, while Berlin was the leading city concerning quality. A concentrate of years later, we found ourselves setting up in Berlin. Germany Trade & spend assisted a second time Second in 2005, when we had to pick a second location in the Eastern part of Germany: Wittenberg.

Sson: How long does it take in your own experience from choosing on a location to fully implementing services there?

Jw: Typically it's approximately six to nine months. Sometimes it can be sooner, Berlin was a quite easy one to do. If you have a plug and play infrastructure, then it's quite easy for us. It legitimately depends on the infrastructure, because this is what we need in the first place.

Sson: Apart from lower costs, what key requirements do you think when seeing for a new location? Can you cite the main reasons for choosing Germany?

Jw: The languages, of course. Multilingual capabilities is what we need. Also, a bit of cultural context and the right agents with the best skill set. This is the most leading thing, if we rule on the location.

Sson: Finally, Janine, we're fast approaching 2011, I wondered what the key highlights of 2010 were for you in business, and what are the expectations for Sitel in 2011?

Jw: In 2010, I guess all was centered around the economic downturn, so some of our clients were facing challenges this year from an economic point of view, so it's always a tough situation to be in if you are a service provider. I think the good thing with Sitel is we have a very diverse client portfolio so we don't legitimately depend on a few or just one commercial vertical. For 2011, it's all about growing and being a strong player within the market. This means that we will continue to furnish our clients with the best Return on buyer venture (by focusing on reducing costs and addition earnings while improving buyer pleasure levels). We're also unavoidable that even more fellowships will look to outsourcing their buyer care as a way of focusing on their own core competencies and reducing costs.

Sson: Janine, thanks so much for that overview.

Presenting - Sheila Blinoff and Carole Stimmell From the Beach Metro News - A Centre of information

One of the central organizations in the Beach is Beach Metro society News, a non-profit, non-partisan society newspaper founded in 1972 that is distributed throughout major portions of East Toronto. The newspaper is available throughout the entire delivery area at various merchants and social entrance points, and more than 23,000 families receive the newspaper delivered to their front door for free.

My request for an interview was graciously answered by Sheila Blinoff, the normal Manager, and Carole Stimmell, the Editor for the Beach Metro News. We sat down colse to a big table in their premises near the intersection of Gerrard and Main Streets. Sheila explained that the Beach Metro society News originally started in 1972 when a group of volunteers got together to fight the Scarborough Expressway that was supposed to cut a swath through all of East Toronto. This issue galvanized the entire neighbourhood, and a group of volunteers started publishing a free newspaper from the offices of the East City Ymca at 907 Kingston Road.

Kingston

The society had come together to rally against the construction of the Scarborough Expressway, and their social efforts were successful. The dreaded construction of a major highway that would have destroyed over 750 homes in the middle of Coxwell and Victoria Park was averted. Today the Beach Metro society News is a non-partisan paper that does not feature editorials. A copy of the paper goes to practically every business and home in an area that extends from Lake Ontario to a few streets north of Danforth Avenue, and from Coxwell Avenue in the west to Midland Avenue in the East.

Of the 30,000 papers delivered, 7000 are delivered to libraries, churches and other social institutions while the rest goes out to incommunicable homes. An wide network of about 400 volunteers looks after free delivery, with each volunteer donating their time and effort. Every second Tuesday just after publication a team of about 30 volunteer captains receives dozens of bundles of newspaper which they then distribute among their private neighbourhood volunteers who in turn take the paper and deliver it road to street, house to house.

The volunteer stories are amazing. Sheila and Carole recounted so many absorbing tales of individuals who dedicate their spare time towards delivering the society news. The oldest of these volunteers is 96 years old and enjoys the opportunity to interact with neighbours and make a connection. Other delivery volunteer had a baby in the morning, and the same afternoon she delivered the Beach Metro society News, just as she would any other second Tuesday. Other female delivery volunteer requested to get her papers early on Tuesday since she was going to have a Cesarean delivery the very next day on Wednesday. An elderly man once called in and said he would not be able to deliver the paper this time since his wife had just died, but he promised to be there to deliver the next edition of the Beach Metro society News.

Sheila added that her co-workers and the volunteer carriers not only help with the output and distribution of the paper, they are also her eyes and ears in the community, resulting in a network of hundreds of volunteer news gatherers. Carole summed it up by saying that "not a leaf falls in the Beach without us knowing about it".

I needed to find out more about these two women who are the driving force behind the Beach Metro society News and asked them to tell me more about their own personal history and relationship to the Beach. Carole admitted that she is a relative newcomer to the Beach as well as to the Beach Metro society News: she has lived and worked here for "only" eleven years. Originally from Wisconsin, Carole Stimmell moved to Toronto in order to perfect a Ph.D. In archeology at the University of Toronto. She and her husband had met at the Washington Post where Carole was completing an internship, and they decided to jointly move to Toronto to perfect their postgraduate studies. Carole's husband studied communications with Marshall McLuhan, the preponderant Canadian educator, philosopher and scholar who coined the expressions "the medium is the message" and the "global village".

Carole's first impressions of Canada were that it is vastly dissimilar from the United States: Canadians are more accepting, more reticent to judge as compared to the more dogmatic and aggressive stance of citizen in the United States. She added that Canada's liberal outlook suits her personally very well, and it would be hard for her to move back to her birth country.

After completing her doctorate Carole worked on archeology projects for 20 years; these assignments took her to Japan, the Arctic and the United States. Her archeology projects in Toronto included digs at Trinity Bellwoods Park, in Leslieville and at the Ashbridges House, the primary homestead of the Ashbridges family who had come from Pennsylvania and come to be the first settlers in Toronto's Beach neighbourhood. For several years Carole was also the editor of the Canadian Journal of Archeology.

Her relationship with the Beach Metro society News came about because she was originally a volunteer carrier for the paper. When the long-term editor of the paper retired, a new editor came in and started taking the paper into a tabloid-like direction with a strong focus on crime and negative news. Carole and many others did not like this new slant and felt that the Beach Metro society News was about positive news stories and an emphasis on the good things that were going on in the community. This editor did not last long, and Carole threw her hat in the ring for this position. In the process she beat out 50 other candidates and succeeded in getting the job because she understood what the paper was all about.

Today Carole still has an interest in history; she was vice chair of the Toronto Historic Board, and she now sits on the board of the Ontario Archeology Society. She also has an wide variety of historic post cards of the Beach; these photos are sometimes featured under the heading of "Deja Views" in the Beach Metro society News, juxtaposing historic streetscapes with a current photo of the same location.

Sheila Blinoff came to Toronto from Great Britain in the 1960s and married into a German-Canadian family. She and her husband moved to Balsam Avenue in 1969, production her a bona fide Beach resident for practically 40 years. In 1971 Sheila had her first child, and when the Beach Metro society News started in 1972 Sheila related with the paper since they were in need of a volunteer typist. Sheila offered her services and also started helping with the volunteer delivery of the paper. several months into her assignment, the paper received three local agenda grants that enabled them to hire three citizen for six month. Sheila figured she could do the job and beat out 30 citizen who had applied.

Around that time Sheila had her second child; the grant meanwhile had run out of money. Sheila continued working on the paper for six months from home without pay. Finally a fundraiser generated 00 which enabled the paper to pay two staff members - Sheila, and Joan Latimer who was the editor for 22 years. Advertisers came on board, and the Beach Metro society News Finally had a viable economic base. several more employees were hired over the years.

In the early years the entire output of the paper was a society affair. several curious neigbours would come together and jointly handle the hand-operated cut and paste layout of the paper. They would also decree which stories should go into the paper, and opinions would often diverge widely. Sheila concedes that trying to reconcile these viewpoints was often tough going.

Several years into the publication the name was changed from the primary name "Ward 9 News" to "Beach Metro society News". The legal administrative name of the Beach neighbourhood had changed from Ward 9 to Ward 32, so the primary name of the newspaper was no longer applicable. For Sheila and many other "oldtimers", however, this publication will always be the "Ward 9 News".

With years passing by the paper became more professional, and specialized employees were hired to take over advertising sales, accounting, photography, and news and entertainment reporting. Since the 1980s the assosication has been doing its own typesetting. Sheila's eyes light up when she says that she has met so many fantastic citizen through her work with the Beach Metro society News; she adds that she has truly seen "the good side of human nature".

One of her favourite experiences has been her opportunity to share in the option committee of a contest to name five streets in a new housing improvement that went in on the previous Woodbine Race Track premises, just west of Woodbine Avenue and Queen Street. The new road names were to have a local or historical relationship with the area. As the secretary of the contest committee, Sheila had the best job of all, inputting all 660 suggestions into the computer and then verifying the accuracy of the historical background of the submitted names. Sheila chose the name "Sarah Ashbridge" in honour of the Quaker widow and United Empire Loyalist from Philadelphia who placed in the Beach in 1793 and obtained a Crown land grant in 1799 for a farm. "Northern Dancer" honoured all the horses that ever raced at the Woodbine Race Track. "Boardwalk Avenue" was chosen for the area's nearnessy to the preponderant East Toronto waterfront promenade.

Both Carole and Sheila love their neighbourhood, and they proudly told me that Queen road East in the Beach was chosen the Best Main road in Ontario by Tv Ontario. One of the judges summarized it like this: "The Beach is an all-round winner. A fantastic inner-city neighbourhood with a great sell market, a great place to visit and a fantastic festival", referring to the Toronto International Beaches Jazz Festival, one of Toronto's largest music and entertainment events.

The importance and work on of the Beach Metro society News cannot be understated. After all, the individuals running the paper had a major hand in stopping the Scarborough Expressway. wide coverage of dredging in Lake Ontario at the foot of Beech Avenue also resulted in an outcry in the community, and the government cancelled the project. Coverage of the Ashbridges Bay Incinerator also mobilized many implicated citizens in the neighbourhood, and their social operation resulted in the closure of the unwanted incineration facility. Stories of leading local issues are kept in the social eye, and the society starts rallying colse to these issues.

What makes this neighbourhood truly extra are the citizen and organizations that donate so much of their time to the community. Sheila and Carole recounted a multitude of society initiatives that explicate that the spirit of charity and neighbourly aid is strong in the Beach. One example includes a major fire a few years ago at the eastern end of Queen road where two citizen died and several others were rendered homeless. several fundraisers were held for the affected families, and money was raised to help them pay for their first month's rent and furniture in their new apartments.

When the big Indian Ocean Tsunami struck in 2005, Centre 55 immediately set up a fund to fetch money for the victims and thousands of dollars were sent to the affected areas. The local Balmy Beach Club raised money for school computer labs when the government cut back its educational budget. Together with strong parent volunteers at each school in the area, initiatives like these make a huge distinction in the community.

In the Beach society spirit manifests itself in many dissimilar ways. The annual "Carolling in the Park Event'", held at the local Glen Stewart Ravine, attracts more than 2000 citizen for a holiday sing-along. Flashlights and candles in the ravine originate a magical climate and an event that the society loves.

Carole adds that there are so many absorbing citizen in the Beach; a variety of media people, artists, actors, entrepreneurs and other eclectic citizen supply a lot of fodder for absorbing and absorbing stories. Sheila mentions the example of a local man who owns the world's largest typewriter collection. Other young man from the community, a gifted musician, had attended the Julliard Music School in New York City and recently debuted in a big concert at Carnegie Hall. The Beach Guild of Fine Arts is a large group of artists who hold shows twice a year. Musicians, actors, painters and artists of all kinds are well represented throughout the Beach society and supply many story opportunities throughout the year.

The doctrine of the Beach Metro society News is to supply news of interest to local residents and businesses. All wage comes from advertising, which is kept affordable so that local merchants and tradespeople remain able to advertise their products and services. Sheila and Carole are selective as to which advertisements they accept, and sometimes advertisers have to wait to get into the paper.

One of the key society initiatives of the Beach Metro society News is the "Citizen of the Year" award which is a joint initiative with society Centre 55 and the Beaches Lions Club to honour volunteers who have made a critical distinction in the society over a number of years. The citizen of the Year is honoured with a plaque on the Beach Walk of Fame in the society garden in Woodbine Park. They also get a extra space in the Beaches Lions' Easter Parade. citizen such as Gene Domagala, Glenn Cochrane, Arie Nerman and Marie Perrotta have all been honoured with this exclusive distinction.

But not only does the Beach Metro society News give awards upon others; its offering to the society has also been noticed and gotten recognition. In 2002 Sheila and Carole were themselves honoured with the Queen's Jubilee Medal as part of Queen Elizabeth's 50 year anniversary as the Queen. At this opportunity every Canadian riding awarded medals to its top volunteers and society builders, and Sheila and Carole were honoured together with other leading Beachers.

As a non-profit organization, the Beach Metro society News donates some of its excess revenues right back into the community. In 2006 the assosication donated more than ,000 to a wide range of organizations, including the Arthritis Society, the Beaches Easter Parade, the Churches by the Bluffs Food Bank, the Share-A-Christmas agenda run by society Centre 55, the Glen Rhodes Food Bank, Malvern High School Scholarships, the Pegasus society Project, Senior Link, the Toronto East normal Hospital Foundation, the Woodgreen Red Door shelter for Women and many more.

The Beach Metro society News not only covers the local news, it also makes news: as a volunteer assosication that acts as the virtual glue of the community, as a champion of leading neighbourhood causes, as an assosication who identifies and honours volunteers who make the society work, and as a critical donor that contributes much-needed funding to leading neighbourhood organizations.

Bob Marley Biography and Top 10 Songs

Bob Marley has been one of my favourite artists for a long time. I probably own more Bob Marley Cd's than any other band or artist with the irregularity of Wu-Tang. My friends mum D, is partly responsible for my listening to Bob over the years because when I was diminutive I used to like the song Jammin' and used to play the 45 single I had of it all the time and I had got the single off her. I would say I have a Bob Cd in my stereo 90% of the time (it can have 3 in at a time). Bob not only made good music but also the messages that the lyrics were about were of peace and freedom.

Robert "Bob" Nesta Marley was born in Jamaica on February 6th 1945 and is the most thriving of any Reggae artist ever. The album Legend has sold over 12 million copies worldwide. When Bob was a child he lived in the slums of Kingston's Trench town and had a prestige for "self-defense" which earned him the title "Tuff Gong" which he and the Wailers used to originate their own description label in 1970.

Kingston

Bob and some of his friends (Bunny Livingston, Junior Braithwaite, Peter McIntosh, Beverley Kelso and Cherry Smith formed the Wailers in 1963 but by 1966 there was only Bob, Bunny and Peter left. The Wailers released their first album (Catch A Fire) in 1973 to weighty success after their signing to Jad Records in London, England. Concrete Jungle being the most thriving song from the album. Soon to effect was the issue of Burnin' which had some of the Wailers most beloved songs I Shot The Sheriff, Get Up, Stand Up and Small Axe. Eric Clapton also had huge success with a cover of I Shot the Sheriff which helped to elevate Bob into the social eye.

In 1974 the Wailers broke up, each to pursue their own solo careers but Bob still prolonged to description as "Bob Marley & The Wailers" with his new backing band which consisted of Carlton and Aston Barrett, Junior Marvin, Tyrone Downie, Al Anderson and Earl Lindo. Backing vocalists were Rita Marley (Bob's wife), Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt.

The new line-up had their first international hit with No Woman, No Cry which was on the Natty Dread album released in 1975 alongside other hits, consuming Up Yourself and Rebel Music. The album Rastaman Vibration was released in 1976 in the Us and was at the top of the Billboard charts for 4 weeks.

Two days before Bob Marley was going to embark on his Smile Jamaica tour Bob, Rita and their owner were injured during a shootout inside Bob's home. The attack was reported as being politically motivated as many population felt the tour was a maintain rally. Even though all involved received serious injuries they all made full recoveries and the tour went on as planned with an injured Bob performing on stage.

By the end of 1976 Bob Marley left Jamaica and moved to London, England where he recorded two albums (Exodus, which had the hits: Exodus, Three diminutive Birds, Jammin', One Love and waiting In Vain, and Kaya which boasted: Easy Skanking, Kaya, Is This Love, Satisfy My Soul and Sun Is Shining among its singles). While in London Bob was arrested for rights of cannabis.

In 1978 Bob returned to home for the One Love Peace Concert to help with the peace endeavor and to help calm the warring parties in Jamaica. At Bob's request both political leaders (Manley and Seaga) joined him on stage and shook hands. Babylon By Bus was released also in 1978 which was a live double album, the song Jammin captures the crowds wild and frenzied intensity to Bob's performance.

Survival which was released in 1979 was a political statement about the suffering of the African population. The album contained some controversial songs such as Africa Unite, Wake Up And Live and Zimbabwe. Bob was also invited to achieve at Zimbabwe's Independence Day on April 17th.

Uprising which was released in 1980 was to be Bob's final studio album and is one of his most religious albums. The album contained Could You Be Loved, Forever Loving Jah and Redemption Song (his supreme lyrics being: Emancipate yourselves from reasoning slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds...).

Bob died on May 11th 1981 from cancer which had started in his toe (due to a soccer accident) in 1977. Bob refused to have his foot amputated because of his Rastafarian beliefs which say that the body must remain whole. Over time the cancer had metastasized into Bob's stomach, liver, lungs and brain.

Presenting - Marie Perrotta From the Pegasus society task - Reaching for the Stars

One man I had heard a lot about from distinct sources while searching for interview candidates about Toronto's Beach neighbourhood is Marie Perrotta, the Founding Director of the Pegasus society project for Adults with special Needs. This non-profit charitable society provides daytime opportunities for adults with developmental challenges, house preserve and society outreach. Pegasus also runs a thrift store whose revenues preserve the operational funding needs of this society and supply practical work experiences for schedule participants.

Just before 10 am this morning I went to meet Marie at the Beaches society Centre which is the location for one of her schedule groups. A few minutes before Marie's coming I had a opportunity to sit down for a few minutes with Gillian Story who is now a full-time schedule counsellor with the program. Gillian explained that the Pegasus schedule consists of three groups of adults with special needs that meet at three distinct locations: the Beaches society Centre, Centre 55 and the Matty Eckler society Centre, all in Toronto's east end. Since graduating with a degree in music and science of mind at Concordia Gillian started working at Pegasus in October of 2006 and admits it was a big studying sense at first. But she says that the staff and the participants in the schedule have been highly welcoming and made it easy for her to fit in.

Kingston

As Marie arrived and took off her coat to get ready for an interview, one schedule participant, a 24-year old woman named Shannon sat down beside me. The group was very cheerful and demonstrated a very natural sense of curiosity. A incorporate of the participants had peppered me with questions as to who I was, why I was here and what I was planning to do, and I briefly explained my interview plans. Shannon mentioned that she works at the Pegasus Thrift Store twice a week and volunteers there on Saturdays as well. She operates the cash register and welcomes the customers. Marie confirmed that Shannon has a great talent working with citizen and referred to her as a "natural public worker". On Mondays Shannon goes to collection Village, a fitness and life skills facility in Toronto's east end, where she and her friends from Pegasus enjoy swimming, weight-lifting and other corporal activities. Shannon was very gregarious and outgoing and inquired whether they might be a possibility to see her later at the Pegasus Thrift Store.

I did not want to let Marie wait any longer, so I thanked Shannon for talking with me, and Marie and I relocated in order to be able to do a quiet interview. Marie is originally from Buffalo, and she and her husband moved to Ontario to perfect their graduate degrees here. After her undergraduate degree in French literature she completed her graduate studies in assessment counseling at the compose of Child Studies at the University of Toronto. Her work background prior to her involvement with Pegasus includes psychiatric study at the Hospital for Sick Children.

One of Canada's attributes that captured Marie right from the start was people's openness, the country's civility, diversity and tolerance. Marie noticed these characteristics right away and added that tolerance is underrated. In her words, if you spend enough time with citizen who are different, with time you'll get over those differences. I wholeheartedly agreed with her and we done that often it is lack of exposure to citizen of distinct backgrounds that creates negative stereotypes.

Marie has three children: Andrew, 34, an adult with developmental challenges, Olivia, who just graduated from international development and science at McGill University in Montreal, and Cristina, who at 17 years of age is still attending high school. As the mum of a child with a developmental disability Marie understands the unique pressures of families dealing with developmental challenges. In 1993 Marie found out that adult children with developmental handicaps would not have passage to day programs after the age of 21. About 650 citizen in Toronto were on waiting lists for existing day programs and Marie knew she had to do something.

Marie got several parents together that were in similar situations, but the group did not last long. She called on government funding agencies and approached the Matty Eckler society Centre, part of the Toronto Parks and Recreation Department. The representatives at the society centre reacted highly in fact and offered Marie some space for her intended day-time program. Once she had secured the location, she formally set up a charitable society and put together a board of directors which included another parent with a developmentally challenged child, as well as three other board members, together with a teacher, a child daycare administrator and an occupational therapist.

From January to September of 1994 the team raised ,000. Alison Masters, one of the Board members, held a big auction and a party at Lido's Restaurant. With another fundraising event and a small grant from the city the schedule was ready to start. One of the earliest exercises was to find a name for the organization, and Marie came up with the idea to draw on Greek mythology. In the spring of 1994 they had set a goal to get the society launched by the fall, so she decided to pick a fall sky constellation and came up with the name Pegasus. The society in fact got its start in September of 1994. Today many other names of heavenly objects are used in the fundraising efforts of the organization: The "Galaxy of Stars" lists donors in distinct categories together with "Hercules", "Perseus", "Cygnus" and "Lyra". another group of donors is referred to as the "Meteors".

Over the years funding has come from many distinct sources. For ten years Marie ran an annual yard sale from her front yard and as the handling and warehouse of donated goods became too onerous, fundraising efforts have now shifted to the "Pegasus Thrift Store", settled at 970 ½ Kingston Road. The store is an fascinating project because not only does it supply essential funding for Pegasus, it also offers practical training and work opportunities for many of the participants in the Pegasus program.

Until 2000 Marie ran the schedule out of her house and recalls that acquainting herself with the essential computer skills initially presented a challenge. In the beginning, when her daughter was only 4 years old, Marie had trained her to take telephone messages. So one day a call from the relationship of society Living came in and Cristina politely asked the caller to spell out the name of the association. When Marie had a look at the message Cristina took, she saw a big note, all scribbled out across the whole sheet of paper in a 4 year old's handwriting, but with a perfectly allowable spelling of the organization's long name.

Today, the Pegasus society project receives essential funding from the Ontario Ministry of society and public Services, and a schedule fee has been implemented. Marie indicated that the government preserve has been tremendously helpful in light of the gigantic financial and psychological strain on families with a man who is suffering from developmental handicaps, which contain such disabilities as Down's Syndrome, autism, inescapable cases of cerebral palsy and others. Marie added that many cases of developmental handicaps do not have an exact diagnosis.

The schedule is very staff intensive: the ratio of staff members to schedule participants is 1 to 2.5. Some of the participants want care to meet their corporal needs. Staff also look after some medical needs, such as seizure monitoring, giving medications, and feeding through a G-tube. All of the staff members and volunteers in the schedule receive the essential training to be able to supply allowable care to the participants. Marie indicates that today virtually all of her staff members have two or more years of post-secondary education and many have university degrees and connected experience.

The Pegasus society schedule today has 38 participants settled in three society centres. Two types of programs serve the participants: the Aquarius schedule offers long term preserve while the Pegasus schedule is a transitional schedule which focuses on skills development and vocational experiences.

Marie strongly believes in a decentralized coming since it allows for greater integration into and acceptance by the community. Other facilities often house the same or an even greater number of participants in one location, but often these locations are in market areas, isolated from residential communities.

Marie is a strong proponent of society integration, and she feels that virtually every human being, together with citizen with developmental disabilities, have the potential to give back to the community. The Pegasus participants volunteer at the Thrift Store, they also take on unpaid volunteer work assignments in the local society at stores such as Price Chopper and Zellers, and they volunteer to deliver a local society newspaper, the Beach Metro News.

Viewed from the perspective of a man with disabilities, society interaction and integration is in fact critical. Every human being needs a change of scenery as well as thinking and sensory stimulation. One day when her son was not able to attend the Pegasus program, he was sitting in the kitchen, sadly staring at the door. Although he was not able to declare his feelings, Marie recognized very clearly that he deeply missed being able to go out and join his friends at the program. She added that when you work with citizen with disabilities you get very good at paying attentiveness to decoding non-verbal communication.

Volunteers are an in fact essential element in Pegasus' success. Marie refers to some of her quarterly volunteers who come out to work with the participants: Margaret Simmons, a retired principal, comes in ordinarily to supply a literacy schedule while Selma Smith has been teaching an arts and crafts schedule for five years. The projects of the "studio program" are quite sophisticated and the artistic products are sold at the Thrift Store as well as by local retailers in the Beach such as Arts on Queen.

Three students from the Behavioural Technology schedule at George Brown College are currently completing internships with the schedule while six nurses from Centennial and Humber College are completing practical society nursing placements for their Bachelor of Science Degrees. A high school pupil named Kelly, from a society schedule at Inglenook High school is also currently volunteering with the program.

The Beach society has widely supported the program, and the participants ordinarily venture out into the society in distinct excursions. Today as I was there, several citizen arrived with shopping bags full of groceries, and collectively the group ready a delicious and nutritious lunch that included chicken wraps and sweet potato fries. Marie also indicated that fitness and corporal activities are an important component of the program. Participants quarterly go to collection settlement to go swimming and play team sports such as soccer and basketball. Marie added that there are quite a few gifted athletes in her groups.

Some of the participants have fewer preserve needs than others, and with several years of aid and preserve they may even move on to keeping paid jobs in the community. The young lady Shannon who I was talking to earlier was a good example of this and she has successfully and enthusiastically been working at the Thrift Store. Marie believes in all sorts of possibilities for her participants and the schedule provides job coaching for the participants who have the potential for gainful employment. Other practical skills such as studying how to take public transit are also taught in the program. Marie adds that this type of training does take years, but it is an important venture in individuals and the society as a whole.

Currently Marie is working on organizing a fourth group which will be run out of Sh Armstrong society Centre just a bit west of the Beach neighbourhood near Coxwell. Marie firmly believes that the decentralized coming is essential for the success of her schedule since it provides for greater society interaction and acceptance. She adds, maybe a time to come successor of hers might make changes to that approach, but for now she is happy that she now has a schedule employer who is very well-known with the program's philosophy. She is relieved that even if she were not around, the schedule would continue.

Running a registered charity comes with all sorts of challenges, together with a wide range of executive duties as well as quarterly financial reports and budgets. Marie indicates that although Pegasus is a small society you have to deal with the same organizational issues as in a large organization. But once you get it under your belt it becomes much more manageable.

Several merchants and organizations also preserve the Pegasus society Project. Residents in the Beach have welcomed the schedule and Marie adds that Beachers are more broad-minded and charitable than they are sometimes given prestige for. Some citizen have even thanked her for bringing developmentally challenged individuals into the Beach. Just recently one personel wrote a 0 cheque to the project, and he was so happy to do so as if he had just been waiting to be asked to write that cheque. The generosity from so many citizen is outstanding, and Marie in fact appreciates all the preserve she has received.

One society that has been particularly helpful is the Toronto Beach Rotary Club which supports Pegasus with quarterly fundraising initiatives. Local merchant Harold Wisefeld, also known as Zoltzz, the owner of the notable fashion allowance store Ends in the Beach, has been a very generous contributor to Pegasus. another local entrepreneur, Dan MacLeod from the Price Chopper supermarket at Gerrard and Victoria Park, is highly committed to society work.

Marie says he has opened his store's doors to hire many citizen with disabilities. He will even assign quarterly employees to work alongside a man with a disability, to train them and help them. One of Pegasus' participants, a young man named Aj, works at Price Chopper three days a week and needs coaching while he is there. Dan sees to it that he receives the preserve he needs. Dan also supports many of Pegasus' special events as well as other organizations such as the Cancer society and the Alzheimers Society. Very few merchants would go to these lengths to accommodate and preserve citizen with disabilities.

After having done our one-on-one interview we checked in on the Phoenix group next door which in the meantime had ready lunch and was enjoying a good meal nearby the table. After a few photos I said goodbye to the group, thanked them for their time and interest and invited them to join me for my Photo Exhibition in the Beach which will be held in early March. Fortunately the location will be within walking distance and the members of the group will be able to drop by and have a look at the photos.

Marie and I then drove five minutes up to Kingston Road where Marie showed me the Pegasus Thrift Store. The store is open on most days, but it is better to call ahead to make sure that the store is staffed. The Thrift Store sells all things from used books, Cds, fabric, clothing, dishes and glassware to small electric appliances and even Barbie dolls. It provides a great opportunity for Pegasus schedule participants to gain practical work sense and preserve the fundraising efforts for their program. Friends and neighbours donate all the second-hand goods that are sold in the store.

For me the highlight of the store are the products that are made by the Pegasus schedule participants themselves. Marie demonstrated a range of hand-made products to me:

- handcrafted greeting cards featuring feathers and a collection of artistic techniques
- bookmarks reminiscent of beaded necklaces
- soup mixes together with recipes
- assorted types of cookie mixes
- the most up-to-date increasing to the merchandise: a handcrafted tote bag made from donated fabric

In increasing to her quarterly duties Marie works in the store virtually every Saturday and hopes to be able to find some help in organizing it soon. She added that initially her plans were only to cover the costs of the rent and telephone, but the Pegasus Thrift Store has morphed into much more than that: a major fundraising tool as well as a great place of studying for her schedule participants. Many shoppers say it's one of the most fun places to shop at in the Beach.

I also asked Marie whether her society has a website yet and she indicated not yet. But she is currently working with two volunteers to compose one.

Meeting Marie Perrotta was one of those humbling moments when you get to know man who has overcome essential personal hurdles and truly dedicated her life to citizen in need in the community. several awards recognize these efforts: Pegasus won the 1995 City of Toronto passage Award and the 1998 Innovation Award. Marie herself was honoured as the 2004 Beach citizen of the Year, following the footsteps of other important Beachers such as Gene Domagala (who is also a quarterly volunteer for Pegasus), Glenn Cochrane and Arie Nerman.

As I walked away from the store I notion the heavenly analogies of the Pegasus project are quite fitting: to her schedule participants Marie must be like an angel, sent down to earth to help them reach for the stars.

For more data about the Pegasus society project or to make a donation please sense Marie Perrotta at 416-691-5651. To sense the store regarding shopping or dropping off donations, please call 416-913-2544.
